Kim van der Heiden concentrates her practice on workers’ compensation defense and general civil litigation, including premises liability, personal injury, product liability and motor vehicle accident matters. With more than 30 years of experience, she represents employers, insurers and businesses in complex litigation and administrative proceedings and has handled matters through all stages of litigation, from initial claim evaluation through resolution.

In addition, Kim brings a unique background in healthcare, having previously worked as a registered nurse and clinical nurse manager at a major medical center. In those roles, she provided direct patient care in a trauma center, managed a neuroscience intensive care unit and oversaw staff, regulatory compliance and quality assurance initiatives. Her clinical experience provides valuable insight into medical issues that arise in litigation, particularly in matters involving injury, causation and damages.

Prior to joining Segal McCambridge, Kim founded and led a Kentucky-based defense firm, where she provided high-quality, client-focused representation across a range of civil litigation matters. Earlier in her career, she served as lead litigation counsel in a regional defense firm, handling hundreds of claims involving workers’ compensation, employment disputes, personal injury, product liability, malpractice and contract disputes. She also has experience defending medical malpractice and general liability claims and advising healthcare entities on risk management and regulatory compliance.

Kim earned her J.D. from the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law and holds a B.S. in nursing from St. Catherine University.

Kim lives on a farm outside of Lexington, Kentucky with her husband and a variety of horses and adopted dogs.  She enjoys spending time with family, gardening, travelling and equestrian sports in her spare time.
