In a podcast published by the Mid-South Horse Review, Host Lauren Abbott met with Segal McCambridge Senior Associate Kimbrell Hines for an episode of the Horse Talk podcast. Hines shared her thoughts on updates and changes to the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) rules and regulations that took effect April 1. As an equine attorney and experienced equestrian herself, Hines advises that USEF members must continue to educate themselves about these new policies, including paying attention to the specific substances that are banned.
“Buying a horse is one of the most exciting moments…for most equestrians in their career,” Hines said on the podcast. “Emotions are high, and sometimes things are not thought out the way they need to be.”
On the podcast, Hines said owners must not simply rely on their trainers to keep banned substances out of their horses’ bodies. As USEF members, owners and not their trainers are ultimately responsible for any rule violations that may negate trophies and prize money—as well as tarnish their horse’s record and reputation.
“The list of prohibited substances could never encompass everything that is actually prohibited,” Hines said. “My clients have to really go and look at the rulebook and see: ‘This is my substance; does it fall into one of these categories that would make it impermissible under USEF to show with?’”
