From a Young Lawyer’s Perspective - Distrust Drives Today’s Ethical Use of AI in Legal Practice, Published in The Legal Intelligencer

In an article published on April 16 in The Legal Intelligencer, Segal McCambridge Associate Sean N. Doyle discusses why attorneys should approach generative AI with skepticism and always verify for accuracy, especially research and citations. He explains that careful human review is key to avoiding AI hallucinations in filings, protecting client interests, and using AI responsibly as the technology continues to improve.

"The secret recipe for success in the era of AI's rise is distrust. The only thing preventing an AI hallucination from ending up in a court filing, costing an attorney and/or their firm embarrassment and thousands of dollars in sanctions, is a skeptical attorney checking its citations for accuracy."

Doyle notes that while AI can help with early research, outlining motions, and sorting through document productions, it can also create inefficiency when outputs require extensive correction. He also points readers to the American Bar Association Formal Opinion 512 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework as practical guidance for ethical and responsible use.
