Key Updates for USEF Rules Effective April 1, 2025, Published in Elite Equestrian

In an article published in the May/June issue of Elite Equestrian, Segal McCambridge Senior Associate Kimbrell Hines discusses 2025 changes made by the U.S. Equestrian Foundation (USEF) to facilitate a safer environment for horses and riders alike. The rules changes, effective April 1, include allowing biometric sensors provided they do not enhance the horse’s performance in real time. Other changes are that only veterinarians are allowed to apply extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) at federation-sanctioned events.

The list of prohibited substances has also been expanded to include injectable magnesium sulfate, injectable oxytocin, injectable pentobarbital, liquid nitrogen, and others.

“Although it is concerning that some of these rules needed to be considered and ultimately enacted in the first place, it appears that USEF is trying to make concentrated efforts to improve and protect horse welfare,” writes Hines, who is also an accomplished equestrian and serves in Segal McCambridge’s Equine Practice Group.
