Michigan Expands Protections Under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act

Michigan continues to expand the protections provided by the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (“ELCRA”).  As of May 17, 2023, the ELCRA bans discrimination based on “sex” to include discrimination based on termination of pregnancy or a medical condition related to the termination of a pregnancy. Further, as of June 15, 2023, the ELCRA also bans discrimination based on “race” to include “hair texture and protective hairstyles.”

These amendments will allow individuals to file such discrimination complaints with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights in employment, housing, education, and access to public accommodations contexts.
