In a feature published on 3/5 in The Legal Intelligencer, Segal McCambridge Shareholder Christina Putman shared her thoughts on pursuing a legal career, the firm’s women’s initiative called Forward Together, and the advice she has for other women now entering the legal practice. Putnam, who has been practicing for 13 years, focuses on personal injury, products liability, and construction litigation.
“I offer mentorship to other women lawyers at my firm and demonstrate that career advancement is possible here,” Putman said. “I started at my firm as an associate and then progressed to senior associate and then to shareholder. I have also spoken up respectfully when opposing counsels demonstrated behaviors that appeared gender-biased.”
Putman says a common mistake among younger associates is feeling that they must always be working the “right way.” She says it’s key to have confidence in yourself and your abilities, but also do not be afraid to ask questions to further educate yourself.
“Practicing law is a challenging profession, and there may not be a clear-cut obvious answer—but taking complicated assignments and pushing yourself will ultimately make you a better attorney,” she said.
