Segal McCambridge Hosts Forum on “The Front Page”

Segal McCambridge will host its 5th Public Affairs Forum on September 6, 2017. Speakers at this Forum include Investigative Reporter Todd Lighty and Reporter Dave Heinzmann of the Chicago Tribune. Lighty and Heinzmann will discuss the challenges that daily print street reporters face in an industry beset by financial pressures and aggressive competition from digital media.

Todd Lighty has been an investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune since 1998. Over the course of his career, he has focused on public corruption and sports investigation. Prior to joining the Tribune, he spent time working for New York newspapers in Syracuse and Rochester and for a newspaper in York, Pennsylvania.

Dave Heinzmann routinely addresses issues related to government, politics and crime. From 2002 to 2007, he covered the Chicago Police Beat, which reports on police dispatches from the streets. He also worked for the Daily Southtown covering news involving Chicago’s south suburbs. He is also the author of two mystery novels, “A Word to the Wise” and “Throwaway Girl.”

With Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently disclosing that the Government will pursue both “leakers” of information to the press and journalists who publish information from such sources, Heinzmann and Lighty will address this compelling First Amendment issue. They will also engage in a discussion on compelling questions, including: Is there a valid governmental interest to justify criminally prosecuting journalists who provide the public with information provided by a source? Should a claim of “national security” trump the public’s “right to know”? And, how can a journalist discern what information, if disclosed, may compromise a national interest?

Segal McCambridge’s Public Affairs Forum consists of a series of presentations led by prominent speakers dedicated to creating meaningful and contemporary dialogue related to local, national and global issues. Forum events include notable speakers from government, the business community and academia.
