In an article published November 21 in the Legal Intelligencer, Segal McCambridge Shareholder Jordan B. Rosenberg advises that, with the new year approaching, companies must be proactive in terms of fostering a plan to deal with cybersecurity threats and prevent potential data breaches. Because businesses, including law firms, host sensitive client and customer data on their internal systems, Rosenberg advises engaging employees to spot and, more importantly, avoid clicking on suspicious email messages and links.
“There has been a significant rise in electronic communications disguised as ordinary messages from known contacts, which attempt to lure unsuspecting recipients into clicking links to malicious websites filled with computer viruses,” he writes. “It is important to educate your team to not click on links or download attachments from sources that appear suspicious.”
Not only do organizations need to be aware of applicable federal laws, such as HIPAA, there are a number of new state-level regulations that aim to protect people’s data security. Rosenberg advises staying abreast of these news laws, as well as reviewing internal plans to both head off potential breaches and know what to do if one occurs.
“Preventing inadvertent mistakes can reduce the potential exposure to vulnerabilities in network security that may lead to significant financial repercussions,” he writes. “Preventing emerging risks requires a commitment to monitoring this changing cybersecurity landscape and developing an evolving approach to respond to this rapidly growing challenge.”
